THE 4 BUILDING BLOCKS OF PERFORMANCE

CROSSING THE THIN LINE BETWEEN GOOD & GREAT

Two decades standing next to elite athletes taught Jeff that talent explains far less of their success than people assume. Four things did the rest, and each one holds up the others.

THE IDEA

Building your foundation on just physical development, or even physical and mental development, is not enough. What separates the "good" from the "great" goes well beyond mere talent and physical ability. The Four Building Blocks of Performance helps to maximize your performance and experience the best of this life, and beyond. My book Built 4 Winning takes a deep dive into these four principles. Please consider signing up for my 4 part series and order my book today.

BUILDING BLOCK ONE

P

PHYSICAL

The one most people start with, and the one most people mistake for the whole picture. Strength, power, speed, conditioning, and flexibility are built in the gym, sustained by the practice reps nobody's watching, fueled by what's on the table, and protected by the hours you actually sleep.

CHAPTERS IN THIS BLOCK

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things.”

1 TIMOTHY 4:8

BUILDING BLOCK TWO

M

MENTAL

The block that decides whether the physical work is aimed at anything. How you learn, how you talk to yourself when nobody is listening, how you handle the emotion of a bad week, and whether you have the wisdom to tell a good decision from a comfortable one.

CHAPTERS IN THIS BLOCK

“Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.”

BUILDING BLOCK THREE

S

SOCIAL

Show me your friends and I will show you your future. This block is about who you have around you, what your character looks like when it costs you something, and whether you are building people up or just using them.

CHAPTERS IN THIS BLOCK

“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

ECCLESIASTES 4:12

BUILDING BLOCK FOUR

S

SPIRITUAL

The block everything else rests on, and the one most easily skipped. Where did I come from? What makes life mean anything? How do I tell right from wrong? And what happens after all of this? Answer these, and the other three blocks finally point somewhere.

CHAPTERS IN THIS BLOCK

“For the word of God is living and active, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

ONE LAST THING

WE ARE ALL COACHES

"Coach" was never really about a whistle. It came from a word for a carriage, something that carried a person from where they were to where they needed to go. Parent, teammate, manager, friend: you are already coaching someone. Start with your own foundation.
